Advance Parole
Advance parole is authorization granted before travel that allows a foreign national to leave the United States and reenter without needing to apply for a visa during travel. Typically, the application for advance parole is meant for individuals present in the United States; however, in extraordinary circumstances an individual outside of the United States may apply for and be granted advance parole to enter the United States. Since immigrants who have filed an I-485 application for permanent residence cannot usually leave the U.S. without cancelling the application, an advance parole document is useful because it allows these immigrants to travel during the lengthy processing of the I-485. Please note that advance parole only allows for entrance into the United States and is not considered being “admitted” into the United States, so it is usually impossible to file an application to adjust to a different legal status after receiving advance parole.
